In his Independence Day speech,PM Modi said that the three forces which are the Army, Air Force and the Navy will have one CDS which stands for Chief of Defence Staff. CDS will advise the government and make sure there is coordination for quick communication. PM Modi said that this will make the Indian Army more strong. The CDS will manage India’s defence resources and also our Nuclear weapons. The CDS will help the armed forces to connect with PM & Defence Minister and vice versa. The appointment of the CDS has been a top priority for the Modi government in the Defence area. Earlier in J&K during the Kargil war, Pakistani soldiers entered India and occupied the mountains of Kargil. A committee was set up to find out why and how this happened. That time the committee had recommended a CDS so that the Army could coordinate better. However due to politics this decision was never made. The PM’s announcement was welcomed by former and now retired Army chief who was the chief of the Kargil war. His name is Ved Prakash Malik. He welcomed the announcement. He said that this is a historic decision and it will help to strengthen India’s defence.
